#PrideLibrary19: Introduction post

Hey all!

Since June is Pride Month, I’m hosting an LGBTQ+ themed challenge on my blog and Instagram, along with my dear friends Hâf @ The Library Looter and Michelle @ Michelle Likes Things! We’re very excited to host this, and we hope you’ll like our challenge and participate!!

How to participate?

You can participate on Instagram by taking pictures that suit the following prompts and then posting them on the set days using #PrideLibrary19. We’re hosting a giveaway along with the Instagram challenge as well, so be sure to follow us there!

If you’re not on bookstagram (or you’d just prefer to blog), you can also participate on your blog! To do so, you can write a blog post to match the day’s themes. For instance, you could review a book that has said representation, or recommend some of your favourites! Let us know below if you’ll be participating!! If you share any blog posts based on the prompts, make sure to follow our blogs and link to our challenge announcement posts, as we’d love to read your posts!

Explaining the prompts

You can view all of the prompts below, and I’ll add short explanations of each of the prompts as well. Each of us will be writing multiple blog posts, so we’ll also give you recommendations for the different prompts to help you along a little bit!

If you have any questions or you’re looking for recs, don’t hesitate to ask 🙂

The basic premise of this challenge is of course to include books with LGBTQ+ rep and/or written by LGBTQ+ authors in your photos and/or blog posts! We’ve tried to come up with inclusive prompts, but at the same time tried to leave things open for interpretation. We do of course encourage you to include as many diverse books by LGBTQ+ authors as possible!!

1 TBR

The challenge starts off with a ‘TBR’ prompt. ‘TBR’ stands for ‘to be read’, and the idea is to share the LGBTQ+ books you want to read in June!

2-8 Pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue & purple books

We fully realize not everyone might have very many LGBTQ+ books to use for this challenge, which is why we’ve come up with several colour prompts. Of course it’s amazing if you can use LGBTQ+ books, but for these prompts, you can share any books that match the colour scheme. The idea is that these photos will make a rainbow on your feed!!

9 Book rainbow

What’s a Pride challenge without a rainbow? For this prompt, we’re asking everyone to post a bookish rainbow! Again, it’s encouraged to use LGBTQ+ books for this prompt, but any books that make a rainbow together work! As an example, I’ll show you a picture I posted a while ago:

10 Authors of colour

Naturally, we’d like to promote intersectionally diverse books, which is why this prompts is all about LGBTQ+ books by authors of colour! These can be books by QPOC (Queer People of Colour) and/or books with LGBTQ+ rep by authors of colour. We’ll be posting recommendations later, so keep an eye out for those!

11, 14, 17, 20, 22, 25, 28 Lesbian, bi, asexual, trans, aromantic, non-binary & pan flag

Aside from the first week of colour prompts, we’ve also added Pride flag prompts! Of course there are very many more, so we’ve included a selection of flags. You can of course use the flags for any aspec identities for the asexual and aromantic flag prompts, and you can use the flags for any non-binary gender identities for the non-binary flag prompt.

The idea is to use the flags as a colour scheme for your posts. Or you can of course include pride merch for your own identity!! We can’t wait to see what you come up with!

12, 21, 27 Trans/non-binary MC, bi/pan MC, asexual/aromantic MC

For these prompts, share your favourite book(s) that have a main character who’s trans and/or non-binary, bi or pan, or asexual and/or aromantic! We’ll be posting recommendations later, so keep an eye out for those!!

13, 19 Favourite couple, favourite character

Who is your favourite LGBTQ+ couple, and who’s your favourite LGBTQ+ character? Show us or tell us about them for these prompts!! They could be the ones you relate to the most, or the first time you’ve seen LGBTQ+ representation in a book, or anything you’d like to share.

14, 18 M/M romance, F/F romance

You’ve probable seen these terms use before, but if not: they stand for ‘male/male romance’ and ‘female/female romance’. These prompts probably speak for themselves: share your favourite books with same-gender couples!

16 Diverse books

Which of your books include other representations aside from LGBTQ+ rep? Share them with us for this prompt!!

23 Pride #SockSunday

To mix things up a little, we’ve included a #SockSunday prompt as well! The perfect opportunity to put on your rainbow coloured socks, or just your favourite socks surrounded by your favourite LGBTQ+ books, or whatever you want!!

24 Disabled/neurodiverse MC

Have you read any books with LGBTQ+ books where the main character is disabled or neurodiverse? Maybe they’re both LGBTQ+ AND disabled/neurodiverse? Or are there any on your TBR? You can share those for this prompt! We’ll be posting recommendations later, so keep an eye out for those!!

26 #OwnVoices

For this prompt, we’d love to see your favourite by LGBTQ+ authors with LGBTQ+ main characters! It would especially be amazing to see intersectional reads included 🙂

29 Favourite author

Who’s your favourite LGBTQ+ author? Let us know in your post for this prompts!

30 Wrap-up

Show us which LGBTQ+ books you ended up reading this month!! Did you manage to read your full TBR (does anyone ever?), or did you end up reading an entirely different selection of books (me every month)?

Conclusion

Hopefully, this blog post cleared the prompts up for you a little! Keep an eye out for our recommendations posts, because those will be coming soon 🙂

We hope you like our challenge! Let us know if you’ll be participating!!

  1. For some of these, I don’t really know if I own books that fit the prompt (especially for the color ones a lot of my books are black). Is it okay to just do some of them? I just did a whole photoshoot to plan ahead so I do have a good deal more than half I think…
